Title:  HIPHOP: an adaptive platform trial for total hip replacements

HIPHOP (Hybrid register-based Intervention Platform in a Hip Osteoarthritis Population) is a research project led by OLVG in collaboration with LUMC. Within this project, researchers are developing a new way to study multiple interventions related to total hip replacement at the same time.

HIPHOP is being developed as a so-called platform trial. A single overarching study protocol is created in which different interventions can be evaluated, such as perioperative care or different surgical techniques. Across studies within the platform, the same outcome measures and analysis methods are used as much as possible. New interventions can also be added more efficiently during the course of the study. In addition, researchers can assess interim results and adapt the study accordingly.

The project uses data from the Dutch Arthroplasty Register (LROI). This enables outcomes such as reoperations and quality of life to be collected in a standardized way.

The aim of HIPHOP is to generate reliable evidence more efficiently and ultimately improve care and outcomes for patients with hip osteoarthritis. Preparations are currently underway. In 2026, the first pilot study will start to evaluate the feasibility of this new research approach within orthopaedic care.
